Reflections

Reflections

This is an early personal project inspired by museum brochures, such as the British Museum's Moctezuma: Aztec Ruler publication. I was fascinated by the lighting against dark backgrounds.

Although most museum brochures do not use a reflection, I was interested in testing flash against a reflective material.  Plus, I just love reflections!

Gear and Shoot

Canon 5D MK IV
Canon 24-105mm f4
Canon 430ex iii Speedlight
Newer 120cm Softbox
Smoke brown glass table top

For this shoot, I opted for a large light source on very low power.  The images were bracketed adjusting for ISO and blended in post processing to remove some flash artifacts.

At right is a jade stone carving of a shishi or stone lion.  The larger scupltures were thought to protect the building from harmful influences.

Blue and white flower motif Italian porcelain vase with flower holes around the upper portion of vase.

Weathered and hand-altered stones from North America.  Left "appears" to be a hand-ax, but it is actually just smoothed river tone.  The center is believed to be a pitch ball used for smoothing pine pitch on the inside of baskets for waterproofing.  The right is believed to be a petrified egg of unknown origin

A collection of historic books dating to the 17th and 18th Centuries

This is a fun item picked up during my "Antiquing" project .  It was a bit challenging given the size, and it is metal so reflectivity was high.  For this item, I had to use an additional shoot-through skim to minimize the reflections.
